Crisis universitaria e investigación

ABSTRACT [RESUMEN]

The growing social importance of science and technology is recognized by a wide range of schools of thought, so much so that postindustrial society has been characterized as one based upon knowledge and technological innovation. Since the birth of the university model created by Wilhelm von Humboldt 200 years ago, universities have been strongly and explicitly linked to science, educating researchers and dedicating part of their efforts to basic and applied research. However, the traditional university (derived from 19th century models) is not only undergoing a budgetary and public support crisis all over the world, but its very existence is being questioned. A new university paradigm, matching the needs of postindustrial society, is being born. At the same time, research funding is undergoing deep changes, although these seem to point in opposite directions in developed and underdeveloped countries. This contribution analyzes the current university crisis and its relationship with research.
