[RESUMEN] ABSTRACT

In this paper we describe the process of maturation of science in Brazil from a historical perspective. The state support for the scientific development is emphasized. During the last three decades the priority of the state policy was the formation of human resources. In the last 15 years, the number of scientists increased significantly and the number of scientific publications increased three fold. The problem of insufficient funds is discussed.
